Celebrations, 2010

Chinese Ink on Paper, 286mm x 384mm

Celebration is a re-visit of an ancient Chinese embroidery depicting a birthday celebration of the gods thought to date back to the Ming Dynasty. Lee’s re-working of the piece draws reference to her previous residency (In This Mountain Where The Sun Shines Through, 2008) at The New Art Gallery  Walsall whilst exploring issues of Eastern philosophy and beliefs in relation to her own artistic interests and influences. The text caption accompanying the piece creates a key link to The New Art Gallery  Walsall’s 10 year anniversary, “If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people.” Confucius.
